Worship is the genuine, active expression of love and devotion

Worship is the genuine, active expression of love and devotion to God. Real worship transcends the sum total of its parts as it is caused by the Lord and inhabited by the Spirit. Jesus tells us in John 4:23 “A time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” The Father actively seeks worshippers. Consider this story in Mark 11: “When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest!” We say we’re the worshippers that He seeks, but what kind of worship do we offer? Do we offer intimate worship like those that personally ministered to Jesus by bringing the colt and throwing their own cloaks over it — that He might be enthroned upon them? It seems like only a few were really involved in that sacrificial ministry in Mark 11. A great many more were willing to spread their cloaks on the road. Still their own cloaks, but the personal touch — touching Jesus and Him touching them — was missing. They were there, but they certainly weren’t up-close and personal. And then there were those that, apparently, even stole from others so that they might “do something” for Jesus. Yep, they went out into fields that weren’t their own, and cut down branches which weren’t theirs, and got a lot of press as they paraded around, waving them in the general direction of Jesus. Ahh, the crowd. No matter their activity, make no mistake, they were spectators, doing it their way at a safe distance. The Father actively seeks worshippers. Those worshippers worship inwardly, yes. (Their thoughts, Psalm 16:7; their emotions and feelings, Psalm 9:1; and even their desires, Psalm 37:4.) But that inward worship is made outward “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) May you be blessed, and may the Lord be exalted as you worship Him in Spirit and Truth. — Pastor Terry For more on this, listen to last Sunday’s study in it’s entirety from Mark, chapter 11

Jesus is being formed in you -- if you'll let Him

A week ago Friday, at the Believer’s Prayer Service, the Lord spoke prophetically to the Body gathered there from 1 Corinthians and Philippians (below.) The Lord is taking us deeper than we’ve ever been in our faith. The Father is opening a door for intimacy with Him through His Son. Jesus is, still, offering Himself sacrificially to us, to live His life through our lips, hands, feet and hearts. The Holy Spirit is ministering that we might keep in step with Him in every moment. In these last few days, the Lord has really been speaking to my heart about who we are to be here, at Countryside, in the Lord. No clichés or cute mottos or simplistic formulas, but the simple Truth (Jesus is the truth, John 14:6) for the Lord Himself in the person of our Savior Jesus to be formed in us, and the great pains He is going through to see that “Christ formed in you” and me takes place. (Galatians 4:19) How might that happen? I think Paul has the answer: “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2) For Paul said: “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,” “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” (Philippians 3:10, Ephesians 4:13) “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” (Ephesians 4:14-16) May the Lord boldly speak to you as He ministers the depth of His Spirit to your heart. —Pastor Terry

Who’s on first?

Who’s on first? It’s a question with great historical significance. Many would think beloved comedians Lou Abbott and Bud Costello gave it household status — and they would be right. Through a hilarious rollercoaster-word-ride Abbott and Costello have brought audiences to the floor (as in “laughing on the.”) And, even to this day we know where it all ended up at… “first base!” But Jesus is the one that actually gave it significance. “They came to Capernaum. When [Jesus] was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:33-35) We're told as Believers that we ought to consider others better than ourselves. Jesus also tells us “in order to be great in the Kingdom that we need to become the very last” while we're here on earth. What does that mean? The Spirit moved deeply upon us last Sunday as Pastor Terry taught from this well-known, but perhaps little understood passage. Little-understood, at least, in how it works out practically. Listen in and see what the Spirit is saying to the church.
